What do you look for in a deer? For me it depends on the deer in my area for the year. Or what mood I am in the day of the hunt.

mature deer, 3 year old deer, good mass, good tine length.around 120-125 and up is a shooter to me. especially with the bow....they all are trophies!!

the one that walks by my stand. do not go looking for anything "trophy" size. I'm a deer hunter not a trophy hunter. and until someone can give me a recipe for antler, thats the way I'll stay.

With a bow I am not that particular. But....with a gun I am VERY picky, there can be no broken tines and I have to think 150+....and I am still waiting for that one to come by
Might be different if I ate the meat, but I don't care for any red meat except for buffalo.

I'll shoot just about any mature doe that walks by but a buck has to wow me (kind of depends on where I'm hunting for a wow reaction but typically mid 130's and up), I won't shoot a buck that I have to talk myself into. It's gotten frustrating around here the past couple of years because the state has been sharpshooting to reduce the numbers due to CWD and I have to say they have been effective
![]() ![]() so a 120's around here has become a good buck. I have no problems with people shooting smaller deer if it makes them happy, but shooting a small buck just to shoot something just doesn't do it for me I'd rather shoot a doe and let the buck grow if possible. I've been on too many hunts where someone shoots a small buck on the last day just so they can say they shot something.

If the buck isn't atleast 130" he'll walk. I consider myself very fortunate to have harvested a few over the P&Y minimums. If I never harvest another in that range, I'll still feel fortunate to have done so.

I live in a county that only allows 1 deer...so 140" or better is what I try to put my tag on.
