You can still get a new Charles Daly (which gets very good reviews) for about 250 bucks or so. Check them out. As cheap as they get but good quality!

I don't know if they still have it, but a shop across town had a Mossberg 12-gauge for I think it was $249, but even that was over my limit at the time. I'll probably have to work out a layaway plan.

I've been thinking a lot about trying to find an Optima Elite system (or comparable) with interchangeable barrels so I have a shotgun for turkey, and a muzzleloader and centerfire rifle for deer.

I had one and it wasn't fun. I guess it could have been it the turkeys were only 10 yards away. It was very inconsistent for me so I sold it.
