125 grain heads

A question for all: who on here shoots 125 grain heads? out side shooting in the wind yesterday and thought the ics 340's with the heavier tips seemed to group better. this was out my ultratec. I was thinking of doing something similar to what Fred Eichler does when he shoots a compound and shooting axis 340's tipped with 125 gr. broadheads for next year. this would be out of my trykon xl set at 60 pounds and 29" dl. make for a heavy hitter.

Greywolf(screenname) has a very similar setup to the Trykon XL and I have a Trykon XL with the same setup with the addition of a half inch of draw length and I pull 70#...He recommended the 125 grain tip for a 60ish # pull setup. At 70# I shoot the Axis ST 340's pretty straight even in moderate wind conditions. Through the chrono I picked up 17 fps going from 62 to 70#. What im getting at is...I would either crank the draw weight up, if you are able to shoot well with the heavier draw, or maybe the better option would be to try the 125 grain tip. At a reasonable distance the 125's will almost always be a better way to go.

Nemo, I shoot axis 340's with 125 grain slick tricks. I have my bow maxxed out at 70#'s, haven't shoot it through crono, so don't know speed or my KE, but I do know it packs one heck of a punch and will blow through about anything. My arrows fly awesome and really don't think I'd gain much going to 100 grain to justify doing so.

My bow maxes out at 60. I put 60# limbs on the bow due to a shoulder issue (rotator cuff). With my current setup, i shoot a 28'' axis 400, with a 100 grain tip. my total arrow weight is right under 400 grains, 399 to be exact. If I went to a 340, I would shoot it full length(29"), my arrow weight would be approx. 446 grains. But I would still shoot around 250-255 fps. Plenty enough for whitetails.

With my Trykon XL set at 60# @ 29.5" with a 361.25 grain arrow it shot 262 so 250 would probably be best case scenario with the larger tip. You would have plenty of kinetic energy to kill a whitetail though. You can look up the formula for computing KE on the web and into the specs of your bow and arrow and find the exact KE of your setup.

I use 125 grain heads.

I use 28.75" 500 light speed arrows. 31" with the broadhead on. (I have a 26" draw and pull 43lbs.) I use a Firenock and 4" feathers.

It's a weird set up, I know, but it works for me.

I do have aset of 452x on the bow. I gained closed to 8 fps with that and the bow was crackerized as well. If you went to a 446 grain arrow. That would get me close to 252 fps if you lose 1 fps for every 3 grains of arrow weight increase.

100 going to 125 grain heads won't change your setup or speed that much but what it does change is your FOC on your arrow. You'll notice more accuracy at longer range shots with it say over and out past 30 yards but you might have to change the pins on your sight to accommodate the POI out past 30 yards. At 20 yard shots you won't notice any difference other than more pentration or maybe 2" more of dirt on your arrow when you pull it out after passing through your deer. LOL
