I love my thermacell as well, and just as said before, you should be playing your wind sensibly anyways, so the smell shouldn't be a factor...

My theory as to the smell:

The mat is saturated with a chemical called Allethrin. Allethrin is a copy of a naturally occurring insecticide found in chrysanthemum flowers. And it has kinda a sweet smell to it...? Smellin flowers?

they work great..........but as a bowhunter i am still not pleased with the smell.........and yes if a deer smells it they will spook been there done that..JMO.

I have used it bowhunting for whitetails and bear and it works great. I am in southcentral KY and our mosquitoes are fierce. They were pretty bad this spring in Manitoba, too. I had deer less than 5 yards from me while using the ThermaCELL and I never had an issue. I also used mine as a wind indicator. While in use, mine put off a very faint smoke and I could easily tell if the wind direction changed. FYI: I have also heard of people spraying the pad with deer scent to mask the scent of the repellent. But, as like others, I never had an issue with it. I won't hunt without it during skitter time

Thanks for the replies, I'm sold going to Cabelas this afternoon to get me a ThermaCell. Can't wait for opening day tomorrow. It's time to put some points on the board.

Go get ya one or two or three. These things work wonderfully. BTW ladies, ThermaCell has come out with curling irons and some other types of hair do-dads! The concept is that they are using the same type of propane cartridge as the ThermaCell units to heat the curling irons. Cool!

Been using mine the last 2 weeks!!! Gotta get more refills!!!! Best thing for early season. Should have had in on in the camper, something bit me big time twice on the neck!!! And no it wasn't my partner. Itches like crazy!!!!
