Tennessee Bear Bowhunting Threatened

The proposal to ban bear bowhunting was approved unanimously by the Unicoy County Commissioners and will be presented to the Tennessee state legislature soon. It is being offered as a “private act,” a means with which the legislature may override administrative rules by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Once enacted, private acts are very difficult to appeal. This act would affect only Unicoy County at this time but there have been wider efforts to ban bear bowhunting statewide—primarily by houndsmen.
