Whats The Best Seed For A Food Plot?

woody, thats a trick question. lots of variables to consider. what type of ground. what type of equipment do you have. what are you looking to draw in? good all around seed would be a clover of some type. or even a mixture of clover seeds. have tried the biologic and didn't do anything for me. but have heard some say its great. where I am(farm) in southern illinois, there isn't much agricultural stuff.(corn and beans) so this spring I am going to be putting in a corn patch(2-3 acres) and beans(2-3 acres) and see what happens. and when it gets picked, will put winter wheat in after the corn. am also going to be seeding the pastures for the cows with some clover seed.

I tired the biologic stuff this year and the deer would not touch it.

I'm going back to soy beans in the spring - summer.
Rye and winter peas in fall - winter.

It's cheaper and easier for me. Just takes a lot of lime.

FC, as you noticed I didn't get into all the work that is involved with food plots. soil samples, land clearing, etc. figured I'd wait to scare woody til, he asked more questions.

I've heard ryegrass is good, and also turnips (along with other brassicas). but the brassicas don't really draw the deer in good until they get hit with frost, because then the starch in them turns to sugar.

You cant go wrong with a clover in the mix. But for a late season plot I love purple top turnips. They tear them up come December.
