Has anyone heard of these? A buddy and I were looking at a farm we are thinking about leasing in WI and while driving through one of the farmers fields he said "man those pocket gophers are even up here".....both of us kind of looked at eachother like.....what the heck did he just say? I asked him if he meant groundhogs, and he said no but from what he described they sounded like prarie dogs but he said no. Does any one have any ideas or pics? Thanks

The pocket gophers are burrowing rodents of the family Geomyidae. These are the "true" gophers, though several ground squirrels of the family Sciuridae are often called gophers as well. The name "pocket gopher" on its own may be used to refer to any of a number of subspecies of the family. Pocket gophers are a symbol of the U.S. state of Minnesota, sometimes called the "Gopher State".

This is the only picture of what we call a gopher (aka known as picket pins, sage rats, and popups) that I have. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y24...e/DSC01171.jpg |
No I have never heard of a pocket gophers? Hmmm

Wyote, What is the farthest distance shot that you have taken to bring one of them down with your pistol? It looks like it is a pretty small target that you need to hit.

With this pistol I can hit PD's out to 200 yards regularly. I have taken gophers at that distance, but I generally limit my shooting to about 150 yards because of there size. There right around 1 1/2 inchs wide when they stand up.
