Jess with his first deer of the '09 season.
Hunter: Jess Johnson
Cameraman: Bill Curry
After doing some scouting the morning of September 26 and finding great sign, Bill and I set out to hunt a set in a big white oak. This tree had a ton of acorns dropping and there were tracks everywhere on the edge of the field. We were banking on the acorns because there were no crops in this particular field this year.
It was a nice evening to sit and the wind was light, but perfect for this set. It had been warm so far this season, but on this particular night, it had cooled a bit. About an hour into our sit, we heard some footsteps. Sure enough, two does were feeding their way out to the edge of the field on, what else, acorns. It couldn’t have worked out better. They fed right out in front of us on the edge of the field at 10 yards.
As I drew my Hoyt back, I heard Bill give me the “ok”. I made a good shot on her and watched her run about 60 yards back into the woods before I lost her. Once we got on the trail, it reminded me why I shoot the Spitfire Maxx Broadhead. The blood trail was unbelievable. Now that is how you want to trail deer.
It wasn’t long and we had recovered my first deer of the season, a big doe. Now that we have some meat in the freezer, it’s after the “big boys.”
