Meegan and her pretty red hog.
Hunter: Meegan Turnbeaugh
Cameraman: Lonnie Turnbeaugh
One of my favorite animals to hunt would be hogs, any kind of hog. I find it challenging but also relaxing at the same time. When I was invited to go to Osceola Outfitters in Orlando, Florida to hunt hogs I was elated as I needed a break from work and this trip would be perfect.
Lonnie and I arrived in Orlando on July 1 and as soon as we got there, we went out hunting. Vicki, Dusty, and I found our ride in the back of a pickup truck in lawn chairs with the sun beating down on us as the men found themselves in the cab of the truck with the air conditioning on…. HMMM does that sound right to you?.... Well at least we got a nice farmers tan and a little heat stroke (just kidding about the heat stroke).
We were driving along looking for hogs and Ralph and Hoppy quickly spotted some. They called out the window for me to get ready. I did not realize I was going to be the one hunting right off the bat, but was up for the challenge. I jumped out of the truck with Hoppy as my guide and Lonnie, my husband, as my cameraman.
The wind was good and we kept slowly walking toward the hogs and they had no idea we were there. There was this real pretty red hog and that is the one Hoppy and I were focused on. Hoppy ranged the hog and it was about 25 yards away when I drew my HOYT to take a shot. My Hellraiser went right through but the hog took off. I shot a little high but still hit lungs. I noticed I had my quiver on my bow which I normally do not hunt with it on, so that is probably why I was a little high. Hoppy took the camera and told Lonnie to tell the rest of the team we’re still after the hog.
Hoppy and I followed the hog and ran a couple hundred yards where we saw the hog pile up in a clump of grass. Hoppy and I snuck up on him and I was thinking I was going to have to put another arrow in him because the hog would get up and eat and then lay back down, it was weird. I knocked another Beman arrow and drew back, just in time for the hog to fall over right in front of me. That was the funniest thing. I didn’t have to put another arrow in him. I guess either the site of Hoppy and I scared the hog to death, or it was petrified of my bow and arrow, not sure which, but I am glad the hog was down.
I also had an opportunity to hunt a gator, but I missed him. At least Vicki and Joe got some good footage. That is why they call it hunting not harvesting. Hopefully I will have another opportunity to hunt gator again.
Thanks to Hoppy, Ralph, Vicki and the rest of my friends for making this such an enjoyable hunt. Nothing is better than friends, family, and awesome fireworks along with hunting on the 4th of July.
Independence Day...
We live in America where we are free to hunt and free to bear arms and we need to stand up and ensure this does not get taken away from us or future generations.
