Adams' First Bow Bird - Pennsylvania

Adam uses his Hoyt & Ameristep ground blind to get the job done on this tough Pennsylvania gobbler!

Last week Adam filmed Holly taking her first ever turkey. This week she returns the favor, capturing all the excitement from Adams' hunt on film!

Hunter: Adam Spittler

Cameraperson: Holly Spittler

It’s been one of my longtime goals to kill a PA gobbler with stick and string. Starting in March Holly, Jeremy and I scouted everyday, and found out that there were plenty of birds in the areas that we could hunt.

The season seemed like it took forever to get here. When it finally arrived Holly and I took one-week vacation for the opening of PA’s spring season. The first 4 days were full of action. But we just couldn’t get the birds to cooperate with the camera.

Finally on Thursday May 1, 2008 my dream was going to be a reality. We had our Ameristep blind setup in a transition zone. The birds were roosting in the south part of the farm and were using a plowed field as soon as they would fly down. They would pick around the fresh dirt on their way to a big green field, which they were using as their strut zone.

It wasn’t long before we heard them start to gobble. They gobbled pretty well until they flew off the roost. Then we were in for a couple hours of silence. But around 8 a.m. I spotted a bird strutting about 150 yards off. It wasn’t long and he was closing the distance. Once he reached 40 yards I drew back my Hoyt bow. He came within 16 yards, I squeezed my release trigger and we watched my arrow hit the vitals!

That’s when I realized I got my first PA bow gobbler. He was a dandy too. 20 lbs. 8 oz. 9 ¾ inch beard and 1 1/8 inch spurs. I also realized how lucky I am to have a wife with the same interests. She was sitting in the blind with me running the camera to capture it all on video.

Thanks Holly!
