Did we mention THE SNOW.

Ralph with his Anticosti 6 point.
The Deer Hunters Fantasy Island was more than an adventure this year. Vicki, Gregory, Freddy, Joe and I headed up there the end of November and all we can say is who did we make mad upstairs???? The weather this whole year has been very rough on us, from to hot and windy to cold and freezing and everything in-between, but Anticosta toped it off with us being stranded on the mainland, due to high winds and blowing snow. So we lost our first day of a 5 day trip. The next day we woke to some what clearer weather, cold, not as windy and the snow seemed to slow down so Gregory got the plane we took of for the island.
We all were excited to say the least to be back on the island and couldn’t wait to get back to the ole way of deer hunting. Jill from Sepaq Anticosta was waiting for us, we didn’t’ waste anytime, off to the office to get our tags and change gear and it was time to hunt. As we traveled to camp we could see the island had way more snow on it this year than last, about a foot and a half already and it started to snow even heavier on our way in. We saw some deer but nothing like last year, by the time we hit camp it was almost a whiteout with no visibility and high winds with freezing temps, just what we always wanted......
We got to camp and meet everyone, a bunch of great guys from the east coast were there already and they all explained to us that the movement was way down do to the snow. But as in any hunt we always hope for the best and wait to see what the next day has to offer.
We woke to more depression! More snow, high winds and very cold. Wow, this year has been so good to us! Jill, Vicki & I headed out only to spend most of the day digging out and trying to just get back to camp. By now we have over 3 foot of snow, there were some driffs well over 4 to 5 foot. The deer we did see all were struggling to move, it was bad. The only movement we really saw a lot of was the fox we out all over walking on top of the fresh snow. By the time we finally got so stuck there was no way out, Jill had to call the road crew and bring in the plow to help us get to the main road. The other guys didn’t get stuck but sure didn’t see any movement either.
Day 4 we headed to the southern part of the island and here even with the high winds and blowing snow we did see a little more movement. Freddy would connect on a great buck and Joe too would have his chance, so both guys filled one tags each with good bucks letting there TC 270 speak out and touch’em.
I too would let my TC 270 do some talking and shoot a small 6 point, while Vicki would see a few deer, but things just never came to be for her to even pull the trigger on one. So we settled in for a long evening of camp commeradery and sharring tales of past hunts with everyone who would listen and share their tales too.
Our last day we would try to make it down to the north shore and check for movement, but nothing was moving, the high winds and the wet weather of the coast was just kicking our butts. So all in all we didn’t shoot a lot of deer, heck we really didn’t see a lot but we know why, .....THE WEATHER! And it was nothing else, we understand you can’t control that, never can and never will. We hunt in the wild because that’s how we like to do it. Are we going back to the Fantasy Island of all Deer Hunters.....????? You bet we are, this is still one of the funnest places to do what we love to do....HUNT DEER!
