Once again we headed back up to North Dakota to one of our favorite whitetail deer hunting places with Double B Outfitters. Traveling along with us on this trip was our son RJ and also with us were Joe and Justin from the studio. Justin Grisham is a junior at Eastland High School; he comes in after school to log tapes for us. Justin is a hunting fool, he loves all types of hunting especially waterfowl so we asked mom & dad if he could come with us for some awesome waterfowl hunting.
When we arrived at Double B we met up with David & John Brandt and Tom Gallagher from Cabela’s who was also going to be hunting with us that week. The weather forecast was not the greatest for hunting, high winds. We took out our hunting and filming gear and made sure we ready for the next day.
We hunted waterfowl in the morning and I think we may have ruined Justin. He said that he saw more birds that morning than all of his hunting season combined! We did take some nice ducks that morning. Later that afternoon, the winds did kick up but that didn’t stop Tom from shooting a nice buck his first afternoon out deer hunting. Joe was in the Ameristep blind with Tom filming the whole thing. This was Tom’s first time to hunt deer from a ground blind and he said he absolutely loved it! His buck only went about 50 yards. Congrats Tom!!
We did not have as good of luck as Tom did that first night; in fact the weather did not cooperate with us at all. On the third day Ralph was hunting and he had a bunch of does and little bucks come thru and then we had a feral cat come thru and startled the deer. After about fifteen minutes more deer traveled thru and then a nice buck came thru the narrow hedgerow that we were set up in. The buck presented Ralph with a broadside shot at about 10 yards and Ralph took it. He was shooting his Hoyt Vulcan set at 65#, with a Beman Realtree MFX 400 tipped with a NAP Spitfire broadhead. The buck went about 80 yards and went down in the corn field. Congrats Ralph!!
On the last evening of the hunt up at Double B, we were set up in an Ameristep ground blind along a fence row connecting a green field and a corn field. We sat there for a while and had lots of does and young bucks feed by us, some of them even bedded down along the corn field by us. We had a good ten point come over the hill, but he never presented Vicki a shot and he walked off. About twenty minutes later and not too long before the end of the hunt, a really nice eight point came over the same hill towards us. He stepped into the corn field and then came back out and gave Vicki the shot that she needed. The deer was about 16 yards away when she shot. Vicki was shooting her Hoyt Vectrix set at 57#, with a Beman Realtree MFX 500 tipped with a NAP HellRazor broadhead. The buck went back in the direction he came in about 90 yards and dropped. Congrats Vicki!!
RJ, Justin, Joe and Tom had a lot of fun waterfowl hunting while we were spending our time out deer hunting. We want to thank David, John Brandt at Double B Outfitters for everything especially the awesome hunting and friendship. Thanks Suzie for the awesome food, once again you out did yourself and none of us lost any weight while we were there.
