Hunting Diary

  • Family Turkey Time - Florida

Ralph, RJ and I headed down to Florida, to Hoppy Kempfer’s at Osceola Outfitters for turkey season! This was going to be RJ’s first time turkey hunting. RJ was up first and he took his very first turkey, which happened to be an Osceola, the first morning out!! Ralph ended up taking his bird that afternoon, on the same day!! Go figure, Father & Son tagging out on the same day!! It was… read more »

  • Double Ralph Day - Florida

March 22, 2010 This afternoon we headed to the wind rows and got set up. It was my turn and I had my new TenPoint crossbow. We saw one gobbler and as we were watching him, four long beards snuck in. I believe they caught our movement and slowly walked off. About an hour later, we spotted two different gobblers and they were locked onto our decoy. I was ready and let the bolt fly, tipped with a Spitfire… read more »

  • RJ’s First Turkey - Florida

We got settled at the camp and met Danny & Gaylan from North Carolina. Danny is really big into collecting turkey calls and has one of the largest collections in the country. Gaylan is a judge and is funny—his stories are priceless. Both Danny & Gaylan… read more »

Out of all the spots I've hunted turkeys in the past, this place seemed to have the most birds on or around the property. The last several years have been tough hunting up there...but that is why they call it hunting.… read more »

  • Opening Day - Pennsylvania

It was the evening before our 2009 PA turkey season opened. Holly and I went to set the bind up for the following mornings hunt. We already had a blind setup but we wanted to setup another one about 100 yards to the east. We just got done setting our Ameristep Choice blind up, and getting our gear together to leave when we heard a bunch of turkeys fly up to roost. We heard at least 4 different gobblers… read more »

  • Early Morning Success - New York

May 1, 2009 , my father and I made our annual trip to New York. I wish I had more to tell about this hunt, but it turned out to be one of the quickest turkey hunts I’ve ever experienced. We sat together before dawn just waiting to hear the first gobble…it never came! We decided to head back toward the truck and try another spot that had produced for us in the past. As we got setup into… read more »
