Russ Mehling - Manitoba Canada

"Elk hunt in Manitoba with my wife Shelley. She was 7 months pregnant with our son Luke and killed a monster bull Elk in a freak October blizzard while he was bugling his head off herding his cows."

I am lucky enough to be married to my best friend, Shelley, for 17 years. Together, we are doing our best to raise our 7 year old son, Luke. It is amazing how much energy could be stored in such a small body. Shelley and Luke are the true passions in my life.

I began filming and being filmed for Archer’s Choice Media, Inc. around 2004. I have been fortunate to film or be filmed hunting Black Bear, Whitetail Deer, Pronghorn Antelope, Elk, and Moose with varying degrees of success. My favorite hunts to film are Black Bear hunts. There is always plenty of action aside from the kill, such as sows with cubs, competing bears at the food source, or the other wildlife you get to see at the baits such as fishers, martens, and even the odd timber wolf.

One animal I would love to harvest on film would be an Elk. We’ve all seen the videos where a huge bull comes screaming to the shaking hunter as he prepares for the shot. I want to be that guy! I have been putting in for the draws and hopefully someday it will happen. It has been quite a journey learning how to try and properly capture the essence of the hunt, not only the ‘money shot.’ I’d like to thank the guys at the office for all the time and effort they have put in trying to get us on the ‘same page’ when it comes to filming and submitting quality footage. I would also like to thank Ralph and Vicki for the opportunity to try and share some of my special outdoor experiences with everyone.
